Monopoly Speed Rules

Is the jail unlocked? No hotels? The Monopoly Speed rules are unorthodox because players race around the board, purchasing properties simultaneously. It isn’t as easy as it sounds because this game now features a stopwatch.

There is no time for penalties in this speedy edition of the classic Monopoly board game (see Monopoly rules). Using only $1,000 bills, money transactions are quick and easy, and there are no hotels to set up!

The complete game box contains:

  • 1 gameboard
  • 4 tokens
  • 4 dice
  • 28 Title Deed cards
  • 16 Chance cards
  • 12 Community Chest cards
  • $1,000 bills (150 M)

Area of Play

To set up the game, open the board in the middle of the table and place the title deed cards around the board next to their corresponding properties.

Each player collects $5,000 to start, then the rest of the money goes to the center of the game board. This cash deck serves as the bank for the rest of the game.

Select a colored token and matching die for each player. Players can choose one of the two GO spaces to place their token to start the game.

Next, shuffle the Chance Cards and distribute four cards per player. Each player will keep the cards face down in a deck in front of their playing area.

Shuffle the Community Chest cards and give each player three cards. You can look at these cards.

Put all remaining Chance and Community Chest cards back in the box.

Monopoly Speed Rules

The youngest player begins by pressing the button on the stopwatch. After a three-second countdown, a noise will signal the first round.

The unique game rule in this edition of Monopoly is that all players can play simultaneously. No one is required to take turns.

The game is broken up into two stages: Buying and Trading

Buying

During the buying phase of the game, all players roll their die and move their token around the gameboard in a clockwise rotation.

Upon landing on a space, you can follow the rules indicated on the board to purchase the property. Players can continue to roll, move, and buy as many times as they would like until the timer sounds.

When buying a property, you pay the bank by placing $1,000 on the center of the game board. Then, collect the deed card for the purchased property and put it in front of you.

You do not have to purchase a property if you do not want to. You can simply roll again.

Unlike the traditional game of Monopoly, if you land on a property that someone else owns, you do not pay rent. You can just roll again and keep moving.

All players will collect $1,000 from the bank each time they land on or pass GO.

You move your token to jail if you land on the “Go to Jail” space. However, the jail is unlocked, so you can simply roll again and keep playing. There are no “turns” to lose in this speedy game.

If you run out of money, you can continue rolling and moving until you pass GO to collect another $1,000.

Trading

After the stopwatch timer sounds, the buying stage is finished, and the trading stage begins.

Players select a Chance card from their personal deck to begin this round and read it aloud. If the card instructs you to complete an action immediately, complete the action and discard the card face-up on the game board.

If the card instructions permit you to save the card for future use, you may keep the card hidden until you are ready to use and discard the card.

Players can trade properties, Chance cards, or Community Chest cards to any other player for any price during this game round. You can continue trading any and completing these actions until the timer sounds.

Stopwatch

The game consists of four rounds: Buying, trading, buying, trading. The stopwatch has four lights at the top that show which phase of the game is complete.

The buying round will decrease during the second half of the game, and the trading time will increase.

At the very end of the game, the timer will signal a horn, followed by the sound of applause.

How to Keep Score in Monopoly Speed

Once the stopwatch has signaled the end of the game, players will stop trading and collect money from the bank for all property deed cards or Community Chest cards with specified income.

If you own a complete set of properties, a Monopoly, you can collect double the rent money for each of those properties.

After collecting all money, players count up their total income, and the player with the most money wins the game!
