Area of Play

This game is so portable you only need a table or playing surface to get started. It is the type of game that could be played on a table at a backyard barbeque, on a corner table at the pub, or gathered around the coffee table.

Players need to reach the center of the table where the cards will be discarded.

The dealer deals out all the cards evenly to each player. Players keep their cards face-down in their own deck to get started.

Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza Rules

The player to the dealer’s left begins by placing down the top card from their deck onto the center of the table for everyone to see. When placing the card down, the player will say, “taco,” regardless of the image on the card.

If the card is not a “taco,” play continues around the table. Each time a player puts a card down onto the pile, they say the next word in the series: Taco, Cat, Goat, Cheese, Pizza, Taco, etc.

If the card happens to show the image that matches the word, as an image of a goat, when the player says, “goat,” everyone slaps the card immediately.

The last player to slap, or the hand on top of the pile of hands, will take all the cards underneath and add them to their hand.

The player who lost, or had to collect all the cards, starts the next round by placing a card down and saying, “Taco,” thus beginning the pattern again.

The game continues this way until at least one player has zero cards remaining and manages to slap a match first.

As if this quickly moving game isn’t tricky enough, there are three specialty cards thrown into the mix! These cards each have their own special action that must be completed correctly before slapping the card.

Special Cards

  • Gorilla: Beat fists on chest, then slap the card.
  • Groundhog: Knock on the table, then slap the card
  • Narwhal: Put your palms together at your forehead like a horn, then slap the card

No Peeking or Flinching

If a player peeks or clearly looks at their card before playing it, they must forfeit their turn and collect the stack of cards on the table.

If a player slaps a card in error or flinches, they forfeit their turn and collect the stack of cards.

How to Keep Score in Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza

If a player runs out of cards, he or she must continue playing. The winner is not determined by simply losing all your cards. They must also be the first player to correctly slap a match or a specialty card.

The game ends when a player is not only the first to correctly slap a match or special card and has no more cards in their hand.

Remember, a player can easily gain back a stack of cards if they are too slow to slap a match correctly!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it called Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza?

This game is named after the specific phrase used while playing. Each time a player lays a card down, they repeat the next word in the phrase, Taco, Cat, Goat, Cheese, Pizza.

This game is so tricky because the cards often look similar to one another; for instance, a triangle-shaped slice of pizza or a triangular wedge of cheese is easily mistaken when moving at a quick pace.
